CERAMICS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
A studio-based ceramics certificate at SAL focused on materials, process, and professional practice.
Ceramics Certificate at SAL
Take Your Ceramics Seriously.
The Ceramics Certificate at SAL is a studio-based program for students who want sustained, hands-on training in clay within a structured art school environment. Students build skills in wheel throwing, handbuilding, sculpture, surface, glaze, firing, critique, documentation, and professional presentation.
The program moves from foundational courses into more advanced, self-directed work. Students develop material fluency, a stronger body of finished ceramic work, and the studio habits needed for continued study, independent practice, or professional opportunities.
What You Will STUDY
The certificate includes progressive coursework in:
Wheel throwing
Handbuilding
Ceramic sculpture
Surface, slips, underglazes, and glaze
Firing and studio systems
Critique and visual literacy
Documentation, portfolio, and professional practices
Final project and exhibition
Course Path
The Ceramics Certificate is designed as a sequence of courses that build from foundation skills into more advanced, self-directed work.
Students begin with core ceramic skills, then move into Level 2 and Level 3 courses that develop greater control, scale, surface, form, critique, glaze knowledge, and studio practice. The final level supports independent work, portfolio development, professional practices, and a finished project or exhibition.
Students may build a path through wheel throwing, handbuilding, sculpture, or a combination of approaches.
