Wheel Throwing: Altered Forms in Pottery

Join us for a level 2 wheel course for continuing throwers to explore ways to alter wheel-thrown and hand-built forms. By altering basic shapes made on the wheel, you can add your personal style and create work that is more dynamic, individual, and interesting to you.

To alter forms, we will:

  • Combine hand-built forms with wheel thrown forms into one piece
  • Use darts to create curves
  • Work with molds to create bases and components for larger more intricate pieces
  • Throw, cut, and reassemble to create oval, asymmetric or geometric forms
  • Increase the sizes of your thrown forms by adding coils and multiple wheel-thrown components together

For surface techniques to accentuate our forms, we will:

  • Texture: faceting, fluting, stamps and found objects to create unique surfaces
  • Slip Trailing: both pattern and texture
  • Sgraffito: carve designs using stencils or freehand drawings
  • Mishima: inlaid colors

Join us as we cut, combine and paddle our way to greatness. You won’t think about the wheel the same way again.
