The Art of the Bowl
Bowls are among the most versatile and expressive forms in pottery. In this four-session wheel-throwing class, students will explore a variety of bowl forms while learning how subtle changes in proportion, depth, rim shape, and profile affect both function and appearance.
Week 1: Soup and Cereal Bowls
Week 2: Pasta and Serving Bowls
Week 3: Large Centerpiece and Decorative Bowls
Week 4: Altered and Expressive Bowl FormsStudents will learn:
• How form follows function in bowl design
• Techniques for throwing larger and wider bowls
• Strategies for refining rims, feet, and profiles • Altering wheel-thrown forms
• Creating bowls for specific uses and occasions.
This class is suitable for students with basic wheel-throwing experience who want to expand their understanding of one of pottery’s most important forms.
Pottery Classes at the Seattle Artist League
Join us for pottery classes in our studio in Seattle’s Georgetown Arts District. We offer classes for beginning ceramics in wheel throwing, hand-building, firing, and glazing. Our pottery classes are open to beginners and intermediate potters.
We have long offered classes in clay sculpting. Our commitment to the medium has expanded with the opening of our south Seattle Ceramics Studio. Join us for classes, workshops, and events in Seattle’s newest ceramics studio.
