Beyond the Cylinder: Developing Functional Forms

Many wheel-thrown forms begin as simple cylinders, but small changes in shape, proportion, and construction can transform them into a wide variety of functional objects.

In this four-session class, students will explore several forms that move beyond the basic cylinder while developing a deeper understanding of design and function.

Week 1: Bottles and Vase Forms
    Week 2: Ceramic Lamps
Week 3: Pitchers and Pouring Vessels
Week 4: Lidded Jars and Covered Casseroles

    Students will learn:

    • Strategies for developing stronger profiles and proportions

    • Techniques for throwing bottles, vases, and pitchers

    • Considerations for creating ceramic lamps

    • Throwing and fitting lids

    • Designing forms for both function and visual appeal

This class is appropriate for students who are comfortable throwing basic cylinders and bowls.
