Firing a pot in the raku style is exciting and fiery. The results are unpredictable but they’re amazing.

For this exciting raku firing camp, students will first be guided through a range of hand and wheel forming techniques. They will expand their skills with slab, coil, and pinch methods, as well as learning wheelthrowing skills and techniques such as centering, pulling cylinders, shaping, trimming, pulling handles, decorating and glazing.

For the raku firing, a special session will be scheduled outside after the pots have dried and been bisque fired, and teens are invited to participate in the firing of their pots, with care for safety.

Since Raku pieces can never be food or microwave safe it better to always make sculptural or decorative pieces instead of dinnerware.

Clay is never boring; there is always more to explore, more to try out and more to create. This is a highly repeatable class.

Firing a pot in the raku style is exciting and fiery. The results are unpredictable but they’re amazing.

In this class students will reference and replicate historical vessels to be fired in our raku kiln. Utilizing slab and coil building techniques, students will create a ceramic vessel that draw inspiration from art history. Over the course of a week, students will have access to the studio to get creative and challenge their clay construction skills. The following week we will have a one day kiln firing celebration where their creations will be fired and pulled from the kilns red hot. The pieces of art work are then smolder in combustibles to create unique glazing effects.

For the raku firing, a special session will be scheduled outside after the pots have dried and been bisque fired, and teens are invited to participate in the firing of their pots, with care for safety.
