Portrait Drawing and Painting

This portrait drawing and painting camp explores classically informed contemporary approaches. Students will create a wide variety of portrait drawings and paintings, studying a diverse range of faces while learning techniques for proportion, observation, and expression. We’ll look at both historical and contemporary portrait artists for inspiration.

Students will work with charcoal, graphite, acrylic paint, pastels, and markers on paper and canvas. Instruction includes demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual feedback. A live model will be included for some sessions.

Topics covered:

  • Proportions of the head and face
  • Techniques for seeing and measuring more acutely
  • Shape and color theories for mood and expression
  • 3D aspects of the head
  • Space and depth

Materials Provided:

  • Charcoal, graphite, pastels, markers, and acrylic paint
  • Paper and canvas for various exercises

What to Bring:

  • A personal sketchbook
  • A favorite drawing tool (pen, pencil, etc.)
  • Optional: Smartphone or camera

All levels are welcome. This class encourages both skill-building and personal style in a supportive, creative environment.
