Sumi Brushwork on Ceramics

Explore the meeting point of painting and ceramics through the Sumi tradition. This short course blends brush technique, composition, and ceramic surface design. Students will learn to use line, contrast, and space to create expressive, balanced surfaces on both tiles and three-dimensional forms.
Angie will guide the first sessions, introducing Sumi brushwork and compositional approaches that emphasize the relationship between dark and light, positive and negative space. Ken will demonstrate how to translate these ideas into ceramic finishes.
- SAL will provide each Student with Practice Tiles:
- Terracotta (clay body) w/ optional Majolica Glaze
- Naranja (clay body) w/ optional White Glaze
- SAL will provide each Student with 3 Brushes:
- Small: Calligraphy Brush
- Medium: Calligraphy Brush
- Large: 1” Hake Brush
- Students will use imagery and composition and allow for positive and negative space to interact
- Thinning and layering glazing techniques
- Emphasize high contrast black on white or dark and light before thinking about adding colors
- Glazing on tiles and 3 dimensional ceramics with Slip Glazes, Underglazes, and Finish Glazes
- Students are expected to provide their own ceramic pieces ready for glazing
All levels welcome. Taken beginning sumi before? Take it again! There is plenty more to learn, and your work will only improve.
About the instructor
Angie Dixon studied art at the University of Washington where she received two degrees; one in fine arts and the other in art history in 1976. She continued with graduate studies in the People’s Republic of China at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in 1984.
Her training has been in the traditional use of Asian Brush and Ink Painting in its varied forms and she has pursued bringing it into contemporary art language in her own work along with practicing the tradition.
Pottery Classes at the Seattle Artist League
Join us for pottery classes in our 2,700 square foot studio in Seattle’s Georgetown Arts District. We offer classes for beginning ceramics in wheel throwing, hand-building, firing, and glazing. Our pottery classes are open to beginners and intermediate potters.
