What turns a figure painting into a story?
In this stylized figure painting course, you’ll learn how design principles like rhythm, emphasis, and balance shape the way we see and feel about an image. Each week, you’ll apply these principles to live model studies—using stylization, distortion, and compositional structure to create figurative work that feels intentional and alive.
In the final week, you’ll build your own finished composition, drawing from earlier sketches to invent a unified, expressive scene.
We’ll work in wet media (acrylic or oil), with an emphasis on monochromatic painting to sharpen your understanding of form, proportion, and design. Expect a mix of quick, energetic sketches and slower paintings that grow in complexity and clarity over time.
Materials list:
- Basic drawing supplies for sketching (your choice)
- Acrylic or oil paint (your choice)
- Medium/ large pad of paper for sketching
- Two painting surfaces, primed paper or canvas (9×12″ to 18×24″)
All levels welcome, but some experience with figure drawing or painting is recommended.
