SLAB LAB: Slab-building and Surface Design

Slab Lab introduces students to the fundamentals of slab building and surface design, and is intended for beginner and novice hand-builders and wheel throwers looking to expand their practice.

This 6-week course covers the core mechanics of rolling, cutting, assembling, and refining slabs to create both functional and sculptural forms. Students will also explore a variety of surface techniques, including sgraffito, texture pressing, carving, mishima, underglaze painting, transfers, and resist methods. Emphasis will be placed on both structure and surface, encouraging students to develop thoughtful, expressive work through handbuilding and decorative experimentation.

Each class meeting will feature a project prompt, demonstration, hands-on practice, and group discussion.

Come dressed comfortably, with clothes that can get messy.

Tools and materials will be provided – materials included in price.

Pottery Classes at the Seattle Artist League

Join us for pottery classes in our 2,700 square foot studio in Seattle’s Georgetown Arts District. We offer classes for beginning ceramics in wheel throwing, hand-building, firing, and glazing. Our pottery classes are open to beginners and intermediate potters.
