Sgraffito
Discover the magic of sgraffito, a carving technique that transforms clay surfaces into layered, graphic works of art.
In this 4 week weekend class, you will learn how to build imagery by revealing it. Using contrasting slips and underglazes, you will carve back into the surface to create line, texture, and depth.
We begin with guided tile studies to learn the full process, including applying color, using wax resist, transferring imagery, and carving. At the same time, you will make small forms such as cups or bowls, which will be decorated the following week. Week 2 focuses on applying sgraffito to those forms and developing control of line, contrast, and surface.
In weeks 3 and 4, you will create a larger or more sustained project. This could be a vessel, sculpture, panel, or a series of tiles. Students can scale up or continue working small, with support in planning, templates, and surface approach.
This class is ideal for beginners with some handbuilding experience as well as more experienced ceramicists looking to deepen their surface work.
You will leave with finished tiles, decorated functional ware, and a clear process for continuing sgraffito in your own practice.
