Sculpting the Figure in Clay

  • Teacher: Ruthie V.
  • Class Fee: Model and clay fees included in class price. Additional clay can be purchased for $25
  • Class Length: 8 week session
  • Class Days: Sundays, starting May 31
  • Time: 10:00 am – 1:30 pm

In this 8-week class, students will develop a finished freestanding nude figure sculpture in terra cotta from live observation. The first four weeks take place in the drawing studio, where students will work from the model through gesture studies, structural drawings, and small clay maquettes. The second four weeks take place in the ceramics studio, where those studies will be developed into a resolved fired sculpture.

This class focuses on designing a sculpture from observation rather than copying the model detail by detail. Students will study proportion, balance, compression, weight, silhouette, major planes, and the relationship of the figure’s large masses in space. Emphasis will be placed on expressive formal decisions: how a sculpture moves, where it carries weight, what can be simplified, and how surface can support form. The goal is to create work that feels alive, intentional, and sculptural rather than stiff, overly detailed, or illustrative.

Students will use a range of handbuilding approaches, including coil, slab, additive, and subtractive methods. Early classes will focus on selecting and understanding a sustained pose through drawings and small studies. Later classes will focus on scale, construction, hollow building, structural integrity, surface, and preparing work for firing. Most students should expect to complete one fired figure approximately 12–18 inches tall. Returning students with strong clay experience may work larger.

We will look at the work of sculptors whose figure work is grounded in observation but shaped by strong formal choices, including Aristide Maillol, Hans Josephsohn, Marino Marini, Elisabeth Frink, Auguste Rodin, and Edgar Degas.

Prerequisites:
Beginning Pottery, Beginning Drawing, or Beginning Figure Drawing.

Materials to bring:
14 x 17 inch or larger sketch paper, soft willow charcoal, pencil, and eraser.

Materials provided:
Basic ceramics tools and sculpture clay are included in the class price. Additional clay will be available for purchase.
