Join us for this fundamental series of anatomy study for sculptures, as we provide you with tools to create more lifelike and powerfully expressive figure sculptures.
In this foundational figure sculpture anatomy series, our goal will not be to overwhelm our brains with Latin names, although they will be provided for study. Instead, we will endeavor understand the structure of the body visually, physically, and tacitly, by building it with clay. Unlike our typical figure study classes, this class will not have a live model every week. For some weeks, we will be sculpting from a combination of anatomical resources, for other weeks we’ll employ live models. As we build bone and volumes with soft terracotta and simple tools, we’ll learn the basic landmarks, some bones, muscles, masses, curves and flow patterns within the human form. Each week, we will focus on a different area of the body, working with core elements and landmarks as our foundation, expanding gestures through the legs and arms. Additionally, we will dedicate time to studying the challenging structures of the head, hands, and feet, empowering you to approach the most baffling forms with confidence. By gaining a deep understanding of anatomical subtleties, we can elevate the lifelike dynamism, grace, and expressive impact of our sculptures, enabling us to perceive the figure more clearly, and convey it more powerfully through our artwork.
This class is open to all levels. If you have never taken a figure drawing class before, please bring the prerequisites of curiosity, patience, self compassion, and tenacity.

Sculpture of Monumental Legs by Javier Marin. Admittedly these are carved from wood, not clay, but we’re going to have fun.
