This workshop is designed to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to Raku, from the handbuilding process to the thrilling outdoor firing experience.
Day 1: Building with Raku Clay
On the first day, beginning potters will learn various techniques to create pottery forms using our special raku clay. Our experienced instructor will guide you through the fundamentals of handbuilding, including pinch, coil, and slab techniques. You will have the opportunity to experiment with different shapes and designs, allowing your creativity to flow as you bring your visions to life.
Day 2: Raku Firing and Glazing
The second day will focus on the exhilarating Raku firing process. You will take your handbuilt pieces and apply unique Raku glazes, specially formulated to produce stunning and unpredictable results. Under the expert guidance of our instructor, you will learn about the different types of Raku materials and how they interact with the firing process.
Outdoor Firing Experience
One of the highlights of this workshop is the outdoor firing. Raku firing involves removing the pieces from the kiln at a high temperature and transferring them to a reduction chamber filled with combustible materials. This dramatic process results in distinct crackling, metallic finishes, and vibrant colors. Experience the thrill of watching your creations transform before your eyes and gain an experiental understanding of the Raku firing technique.
Take Home Your Creations
After the workshop, you will have a collection of unique Raku pottery pieces to display or give as special gifts. Each piece will be a testament to your creativity and the enchanting nature of Raku firing. You will also gain a comprehensive understanding of the Raku process, including the handbuilding techniques and glazing methods.
