Portraits in Clay

Cultivate curiosity, hone your observation skills, and learn to be expressive in your own unique style. Students will work with a diversity of live models and sketches, learning to create believable and expressive portraits that convey a sense of life and character.

This course emphasizes elements of sculpture such as form, line, texture, volume, proportion, scale, balance, and movement. While realism is not the primary goal for every artist, achieving a sense of believability and life in the portraits is emphasized. Along with learning to sculpt facial features, participants will be further challenged to develop their portraits with non-realistic narrative and expressive additions. Students will also explore decorative finishes such as texture, slips, glazes, and oxides.

With slideshow examples, discussions, demos, and individual attention, you’ll hone your observation skills and push the boundaries of your creative potential. Some models will be repeated so participants will have the opportunity to develop their work to completion with a live model. Realist and stylized/imaginative artists alike are welcome.

Sculptors are invited to use open studio hours. The clay studio is open 7 days a week.

This class is open to ALL LEVELS.

Tools and 1 bag of clay will be provided. Additional clay can be purchased in class.
