Painting Processes with Carlos San Millan
Join us for an inspiring and challenging workshop with an internationally renowned artist, known for his ability to capture the sensation of light in interiors. In this workshop, you will explore various types of underpainting related to the subject, light, and color, and learn how to create unity and homogeneity in your paintings from the beginning. You will explore the topics of layer superposition and shade/nuance generation, and how to take advantage of randomness and happy accidents along the painting process to add depth and character to your work. Through the demo, you will learn the importance of recovering shape through re-drawing over dried layers, and how to determine the focus of attention and center of interest in your paintings. You will also explore the use of light and color reflection to create a visual path through the painting. Additionally, the workshop will provide you with the opportunity to experiment with different tools and their painting possibilities, opening up new avenues of creative expression. Throughout the workshop, Carlos will discuss how to have a quiet dialogue with your painting and how to take advantage of time as your main tool for creative exploration and growth. By the end of the workshop, you will have gained valuable insights and techniques to elevate your painting skills and express the sensation of light in interiors in your work. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn from this renowned international artist!
Please bring your own reference photos to the workshop! (you can bring 3 or 4 to choose from) printed or on your tablets.
You can bring any photos related to interiors (including interiors of course), like architecture, urban landscape, etc, and also landscapes. Carlos will demo interiors, but you will be able to apply his technique to any similar theme. We don’t want to give you too many restrictions, because we want you to paint a subject you are inspired by.
Materials List
- Supplies list:
Supports:
I usually work on rigid supports, so I would recommend Primed and prepared
Wood painting panels or Cotton fine-grane canvas panels. About 15” x 20”
(40 x 50 cm) size would be fine.
Students would also be able to work on traditional canvas but this support
presents some inconveniences when working with large palette-knives.Brushes and paintbrushes:
Assorted flat and round soft brushes no 3 to 12 aprox.
Assorted flat natural hard bristle brushes no 6 to 24 aprox.
Assorted flat natural bristle paintbrushes 1” to 3” widthOther tools:
Assorted flexible palette knives between 2” and 8” width (hardware store
type)*
Medium-grain sandpaper (3M-600 for instance) in case we need to smooth
the sharpen edges and corners of the palette-knifes
Feel free to bring any kind of artist palette-knives you normally use as well.

Please notice that I always work exclusively with oil colors but due to the
nature of this workshop and time limitations, I’m going to start painting my
demos with acrylic or alkyd** fast drying colors (Griffin by W&N type) to get a
dry surface as fast as possible, and will reserve oil paintings for the last
stages, when more precise nuances are needed.
Of course you can use alkyd or acrylic colors in the whole process as well if
that’s your preference.*Flexible palette knives type (available on hardware stores):

BIO
“I was born in Spain in 1969 and after living some years in Quito, Ecuador with my family, we are now back in Madrid. My paintings have a big autobiographical component: My subjects belong many times to my immediate environment, to my nearest reality, largely due to my belief that it is not necessary to go too far to find the universal in everyday things. I would define my work as a continuous searching that becomes frustrating sometimes; I’m a little obsessed with reaching some way to represent things and matter satisfactorily and definitively.”
