This course helps students move from observed figure studies into more personal, stylized images. Students begin with the figure, then explore exaggeration, simplification, distortion, gesture, pattern, color, and surface.
The goal is to develop a visual language that feels intentional rather than accidental. Students learn how style grows from choices: what to simplify, what to repeat, what to sharpen, what to soften, what to distort, and what kind of world the figure belongs to.
Prerequisites: Beginning Drawing or equivalent. Figure Drawing recommended. Students working in paint should have Beginning Painting or equivalent.
Materials list:
Students choose drawing or painting materials they are prepared to use. Bring enough paper, panels, canvas, or other surfaces for multiple studies each session. Dry media may include charcoal, graphite, ink, pastel, colored pencil, erasers, chamois, and tape. Wet media may include watercolor, acrylic, oil, brushes, palette, rags or paper towels, and water container or approved solvent container.
- Basic drawing supplies for sketching (your choice)
- Acrylic or oil paint (your choice)
- Medium/ large pad of paper for sketching
- Two painting surfaces, primed paper or canvas (your choice)
