Painting 3: Energy, Movement, Atmosphere
(Formerly Carlos San Millan Bonus Class)
Course Description:
This Level 3 painting course explores how energy, movement, and atmosphere are created through shapes and contrast in composition. Students will analyze great paintings and develop their own dynamic works by manipulating weight, contrast, and movement through value, color, shape, texture, edges, and mark-making.Working from observation into a variable level of abstraction with still lifes and photographs, students will learn to translate what they see into the language of painting—moving beyond representation to create spaces that feel alive with rhythm, depth, and mood. Through structured exercises and independent projects, students will refine their ability to direct the viewer’s eye, harness contrast, and cultivate a sense of atmosphere in their compositions.
