Intuitive Painting: Translating Music
In this four-week painting series, students will explore music as a starting point for developing a personal visual language. Rather than illustrating a song or simply painting how it makes you feel, you’ll experiment with ways to translate rhythm, tempo, repetition, harmony, silence, and structure into line, shape, value, texture, color, and composition.
Each week introduces a different group of painting elements through short studies and longer works. You’ll begin by exploring rhythm through line and shape, then move into value, density, and texture before considering composition, contrast, and structure. In the final weeks, you’ll choose a piece of music and use the visual vocabulary you’ve developed to create larger, more resolved paintings.
This class is designed for both new and returning Intuitive Painting students.
Expect experimentation, playful constraints, plenty of painting time, and opportunities to discover how listening can lead to unexpected visual decisions.
Materials:
Acrylic Paint:
- Pyrrole Red Medium or Naphthol Red Medium (primary red)
- Quinacridone Red or Alizarin Crimson Hue (deep, transparent red)
- Ultramarine Blue (red blue)
- Optional: Phthalo Turquoise (green blue)
- Azo Yellow Medium or Benzimidazolone Yellow Medium (primary yellow)
- Hansa Yellow Light or Lemon Yellow (cool yellow)
- Titanium White (large tube or jar recommended)
Surfaces to Paint On
- Canson XL Oil & Acrylic Pad – 18” × 24” (no gesso needed)
- Optional: Cardboard, unstretched canvas, canvas sheets, or found surfaces
Mixing and Layering Tools
- Sta-Wet palette or freezer paper taped to a board
- Small spray bottle (to keep paints moist)
- White gesso (only needed for surfaces that are not pre-primed)
Brushes and Mark-Making Tools
- Variety of acrylic brushes: flats and brights in small, medium, large, and extra-large
- Old brushes are welcome
- Palette knife(s), old credit cards, or other scraping tools
Studio Basics
- Vine or willow charcoal (not compressed)
- Rags or paper towels (Viva or blue shop towels recommended)
- Notebook or sketchbook and pen (for prompts and reflection)
Optional Tools for Exploration
Bring anything you’re curious about, this class includes space for experimentation.
- Drawing tools: pens, pencils, markers, oil or chalk pastels
- Acrylic mediums: matte or gloss medium, glazing liquid
- Brayer or silicone color shaper
- Small squeegee, scissors, X-Acto knife
- Artist tape or masking tape
- Spray bottle (fine mist)
- Collage materials or texture media
- Additional surfaces: misc paper, wood panels, raw or stretched canvas, + GESSO
