Giacometti and The Figure in Motion

Intensive figure drawing workshop with Catherine Lepp

This session will begin with a visit to Seattle Art Museum’s Exhibition ALBERTO GIACOMETTI: TOWARD THE ULTIMATE FIGURE. Ticket to SAM included in class price.

This class will be in conjunction with the Seattle Art Museum’s Giacometti show. At the museum we will make drawings from Giacometti sculptures and discuss his painting and drawing methods. In the SAL studio we will draw from the model as they move around the space. Each morning students will explore a variety of processes, surfaces and drawing exercises inspired by Giacometti to create several drawings and mixed media pieces utilizing the model in relation to the rectangle and environment. Afternoons will be spent composing a larger piece, experimenting with lines, marks and erasing; students will learn how to translate the live experience of the model as they sit, stand or walk around the studio into a sustained synthetic piece. We will draw, paint and collage. Sessions will include lunchtime slideshows and end of class critiques and peer discussion.

The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.  Alberto Giacometti
