Fran O’Neill: Giant Figures – Intensive

This intensive is grounded in the belief that drawing is a rigorous investigation of perception. Working from live models, students will examine proportion, weight, spatial tension, and the dynamic relationship between the figure and the picture plane.

Participants will work primarily in charcoal on paper, moving from sustained observational studies into ambitious, large-scale drawings. The course emphasizes scale as a tool: expanding the figure beyond life size to challenge habitual mark-making, bodily movement, and compositional structure.

Long working days (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with possible extension based on group need) support deep focus and sustained looking. Students will produce multiple drawings across increasing scale, refining decisions through revision and critical feedback.

Individual reviews and group critique form the core of the final sessions, with attention to structural clarity, spatial invention, and the physical presence of the drawn figure.

Open to all levels; prior drawing experience is recommended.
