Drawing can be seen as a means to an end or as the beginning of exploring bigger ideas. Compositional elements and the idea of ‘getting it right’ is the jumping off point for this ‘hands on’ class. It is designed for the intermediate student and has the student drawing during each session.

Each week different ideas will be explored relating to (though, not limited) space, form, volume, texture; all vital to composition and as a way to hone hand/eye coordination.  During the 8 week class, students will explore a variety of subject matter; 4 weeks of working from the model, 2 weeks of still life, 2 weeks of head studies. The emphasis for this course will be on the ‘making’ – with constructive critiques occurring one: one during the class, as well as group critiques. Students should be willing to discuss their work and learn to expand their vocabulary in terms of talking about their process.

Students will explore various approaches from using different materials and media, always with an emphasis on structure and composition. Students should expect to be challenged on their vision and be willing to rework a drawing.

At times, various artists contemporary and historical may be discussed in relation to their approaches and an analysis of individual works will occur. Students should expect to expand their perceptual drawing skills.  This class is an intermediate drawing class.

• 20 sheets of cold press paper, 90lbs, 22x 30”
• Sketch book
• Range of Drawing Pencils from H, HB, F, 2b-6B

• Brushes, variety (sable to flat)
• Colored pencils – red & blue
• Plastic containers to hold sumi ink
