Through a series of exercises and paintings from observation as well as photo reference we will explore the sometimes puzzling and mysterious element of color, and how painters use it to create depth, movement, atmosphere, harmony, and the sensation of light.

This is a class specific for acrylic painters. For a class in oils or multi-media, see our Thursday class series.
Prerequisite: Beginning acrylic from any instructor, or independant experience painting.

Materials list 

Heavy body acrylics (not liquid) such as Utrecht Artists Acrylic Colors,  2 oz tubes:
  • Titanium white (2 tubes)
  • Quinicridone red or Alizarin Crimson Hue
  • Cadmium-free Red Medium
  • Cadmium-free yellow medium
  • Cadmium-free lemon yellow
  • Yellow ochre
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Brilliant blue or Phthalo blue
  • Viridian green
  • Permanent green light
  • Venetian Red or Transparent Red Oxide

OTHER SUPPLIES:

  • Brushes: Long handled acrylic or oil brushes brights in these sizes 8, 6, 4 and 1/2″. Synthetic is fine. Bring what you already have. (Soft watercolor brushes may be too soft.)
  • a palette knife or paint knife with a minimum 2″ trowel and a curved handle neck
  • Disposable palette paper pad, approx 12×16.
  • One small and one large size pad of cold press paper (aka watercolor paper) such as Strathmore 400 140 lb. 9×12″ and 12″ x 18″  (Other brands may have slightly different sizes. Stay with at least 140 lb weight of paper.)
  • Additional choice: as we progress you have the option of painting on canvas or panels
  • Roll of white artists tape
  • Roll of heavy paper towels or Home Depot style painters paper rags.
  • Flexible gloves suggested
  • Optional: a zippered water resistant portfolio (larger than 12″ x 18″ ) for carrying your work or 2 pieces of foam core board gorilla taped together is also good and much less expensive
