“Color in pictures is like enthusiasm in life.”

Do you want to draw? Do you want to learn more about color?
Here is an opportunity to do both!
In this exploration of color in drawing each class will focus on a specific color contrast; for example, students will practice working monochromatically, using warm and cool colors, and finding color harmonies. At the same time, the basic elements of drawing – line, shape, value, space, form, texture – will be included in the discussions and exercises.
By taking color theory into enthusiastic practice, students will build confidence in using color as an integral part of a drawing and have fun in the process.
We will work mostly with colored pencils. During the first sessions we will discuss other color drawing materials that students may want to bring and use.
This in-depth class for adult students is appropriate for beginners, people with some drawing lessons, or experienced artists who want additional instruction and practice.
Materials List:
Drawing paper: I suggest a pad of drawing paper at least 11” x 14” (8” x 10” is small for our purposes, and 18” x 24” is a bit large for the time we have during class.
Canson XL Mixed Media Pad 11” x 14” is a good option
Later in the session I may ask you to bring a sheet or two of better drawing paper.
A Color Wheel there are large and small versions – either is fine.
Color pencils: I recommend Prismacolor for the work we will be doing; they have a slight softness that allows for a density of color.
12 color set at least – more is good!
Faber Castell also makes color pencils that would work for this class, but they are somewhat harder in general than Prismacolor; maybe do some testing or talk to the staff at the art store for recommendations.
