Drawing the Figure in the Interior
- Teacher: Mary Shea
- Fee: Model fees included in course price
- Class Length: 8 week session
- Class Days: Thursdays beginning April 10
- Time: 10:00 – 12:30 pm PDT
This Level II drawing class will focus on drawing the model as part of a whole environment.
Students will explore how basic drawing elements – line, value, shape, form – can help them
build a convincing and expressive ‘space’ for the figure to inhabit. The emphasis will be on
responsive and direct drawing from the model as well as from the works of other artists, but the
goal will be for students to bring their memories, experiences and imagination into the worlds
they create in their drawings.
Designed for students with some drawing experience, the class includes active drawing time in
each session. Constructive feedback will be provided one-on-one during the class.
Prerequisite: beginning drawing, figure drawing
Materials List
Drawing paper: at least 14” x 17”; 18” x 24” would be great. I will also
suggest other paper choices during the session
- Canson XL Mixed Media Pad – in any case, a medium weight paper is best.
- Newsprint paper – 18” x 24”. Get the cheapest you can find.
Pencils and charcoal: For simplicity, you could get a package such as General’s brand and others usually have sets of some essential tools, including:
- graphite pencils
- charcoal
- charcoal pencils
- eraser
- sharpener
If you’d rather buy separately, please get:
- Charcoal sticks (they come in small bags/boxes of 12 or so) medium or soft.
- Graphite pencils (at least 3) – get soft ones: 2B, 4B, 6B
- Eraser (1 or 2) – a solid one, like Staedtler or Pink Pearl
- Pencil sharpener – hand held, not electric – there are endless choices.
- Ruler – 12” or 18”
