Drawing into Painting: Still Life
Move beyond mere replication to capture the essence of your experience.
The Fauvist painter Pierre Bonnard traveled everywhere with a dull 6B pencil and sketch paper in his shirt pocket. When he came upon a scene that inspired him, he’d make a quick sketch. These black marks on white paper were made in just a few minutes, yet they contained everything he needed for a painting.
In Drawing into Painting: Still Life, we’ll explore how to give ourselves the information we need from our sketches, and how to translate that information into marks that spark our best responses in paint. We’ll discuss the interplay of light and shadow, the rhythm of shapes, and the essence of movement, describing the relationships between objects and the atmosphere of the moment. These elements are essential cues that guide us through our paintings. Colors, mood, and energy can all be translated into marks, helping us create works that convey not just the visual aspects of a scene but its sensory and emotional depth as well.
Students will work from their own perception, translating still lifes and personal photos into drawings then into paintings, taking on the challenges that come with this process. This course will teach you how to transform what you see into personal expression, moving beyond mere replication to capture the essence of your experience.
