Draw Like Van Gogh
What makes a Van Gogh drawing feel so alive? In this four-week class you’ll learn the powerful line techniques behind his work and how to build drawings that pulse with movement, rhythm, and energy.
Van Gogh approached drawing differently from most artists. Instead of blending shadows, he built entire landscapes out of expressive marks: sweeping lines for sky, spiraling strokes for trees, patterned rows for fields. Each surface has its own language of marks, and when those marks repeat and flow across the page, the drawing begins to vibrate with life.
In this class you’ll learn how to construct a drawing the way Van Gogh did: beginning with simple structure, then layering directional lines that describe form, texture, and motion. We’ll explore how rhythm, repetition, and bold mark-making can transform ordinary subjects—trees, cottages, wheat fields, chairs—into dynamic compositions.
Each week you’ll complete guided drawings that develop a different part of Van Gogh’s approach, from strong underlying structure to expressive surface pattern. By the end of the course you’ll produce a fully realized Van Gogh–inspired landscape drawing built entirely from intentional marks.
No drawing experience required. Beginners gain a clear, engaging introduction to drawing, and experienced artists discover new energy and freedom in their line work.
Learn to draw with bold, expressive line and discover why Van Gogh’s drawings still feel electric more than a century later.
