Materials
This class has an extensive materials list. It’s extreme, but it’s also highly adaptable. We’ll start with value studies and then move into color mixes, texture, edges, application tools, etc. Students can get a lot out of the class with basic drawing materials, so don’t break the bank, and don’t purchase supplies you’re not already comfortable using. Zoom sessions will not include materials lessons or studio time, so projects will be done outside of class. We will go over this on day 1.
Suggested materials for WEEK ONE:
For day one, basic drawing materials will be fine. If all you want to do is draw, you’ll still get most of the lessons. Below is a fancy suggestion appropriate for beginning and advanced students alike.
Other acceptable material options:
- Vine charcoal
- Compressed charcoal sticks
- Drawing paper 5″ x 7″ (minimum size) 15” x 20” (maximum size)
- Watercolor or mixed media paper 5″ x 7″ (minimum size) 15” x 20” (maximum size)
- Painting panels 5″ x 7″ (minimum size) 15” x 20” (maximum size)
- Oil or acrylic paints are great options. Watercolor, gouache, and digital paints may also work for most exercises, but will require intermediate level skill
- Mix of brushes and palette knives (Carlos uses flexible putty knives of various sizes from the hardware store)
Not recommended:
These may work for some projects, but not all: watercolor, gouache, pastels, pens, markers, pointed charcoal, graphite pencils, colored pencils. Stretched canvas is also not recommended for use with knives.
