Beginning Watercolor

  • Teacher: Sarah Jones
  • Class Length: 8 Weeks
  • Class Days: Wednesdays, beginning January 14
  • Time: 6:00 – 9:00 pm PST
Watercolor is a friendly, light, and luminous medium. It is perfect for quick sketches out in nature, or a quiet activity inside. In this beginning friendly class, students will be using wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques to explore the movement and luminosity of watercolor pigments in painting. Learn fundamental ways to control washes, create texture, capture quality of natural light and achieve active and vibrant color relationships.
OPEN TO ALL LEVELS.

A word about materials

You don’t have to have everything from the material list.  The important thing is to be resourceful and try to use what you already own. Many of the great art works from history were a by-product of limited supplies! That said, any watercolor you have, will work. If you don’t have a palette, a ceramic plate will work just fine. You know…be creative.

Beginning Watercolor Supplies:
paper pads (see details below)
palette (see details below)
brushes (see details below)
paint (see details below)
pencils: 2H H, 2B
eraser
masking tape or artist’s tape tape
roll of paper towel
2 mason jars
toothbrush
Mr. Clean magic eraser

Paper:
Good quality rag (100% cotton) paper, such as Arches, Lanaquarelle, Richeson or Saunders is
recommended. Student grade paper, such as Strathmore or Canson, will slow your progress
considerably. It costs less, but it represents a false economy.
140 lb. is heavy enough (90 lb. buckles). Cold pressed is most forgiving, but hot pressed or rough
will be fine.
Don’t use pads, they buckle.
1 Cold Press Block
(optional) 1 Hot Press Block:
Arches hot press block ,12 sheets 10 x 14”
Fabriano hot press, 12 sheets 9 x 12”
Palette:
White plastic 10 well paint tray (Blick 03068-1010)
(Optional): Creative Mark, Butcher Tray

Brushes:
3 flats, 1/2″, 1″ and 1 1/2” (slanted tips are fine)
2 rounds, roughly 1⁄4 inch and 3⁄4”
Expensive sable brushes are delightful, but synthetic fiber is just fine.
