Watercolor is a friendly, light, and luminous medium. It is perfect for quick sketches out in nature, or a quiet activity inside. In this beginning friendly class, students will be using wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques to explore the movement and luminosity of watercolor pigments in painting. Learn fundamental ways to control washes, create texture, capture quality of natural light and achieve active and vibrant color relationships.

A word about materials

Links are provided as shopping examples. You are welcome to buy supplies anywhere.

Most important:

• Watercolor paper: 140 lb. cold press, preferably 100% cotton. A watercolor block is easiest because it helps prevent buckling. Good brands include Arches, Lanaquarelle, Richeson, Saunders Waterford, and Fabriano.
Example: Arches Watercolor Blocks

• Watercolor paint: a small set of good paints is better than a large set of low-quality paints.
Examples: American Journey Artists’ Watercolor Voyager Sets or American Journey Artists’ Watercolor Tubes

• Brushes: synthetic watercolor brushes are fine. Bring a few flats and rounds if you have them.

Also bring:

• Palette, or a ceramic plate
• Pencils: 2H, H, 2B
• Eraser
• Masking tape or artist’s tape
• Roll of paper towels
• 2 mason jars or water containers
• Toothbrush
• Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

Optional:

• Hot press or rough watercolor paper
• Lightweight paint board, such as masonite or gatorboard, approximately 16 x 24”. Newer plastic political yard signs also work well.
