Beginning Painting Part 2: Exploration of Color
This class series is for students who have taken Beginning Oil Painting at least once.
This class series picks up where Beginning Oil Painting leaves off with a structured exploration of color theory. How to develop a palette for your painting? How do you find the colors your painting needs?
In this class for oil painters, color theory will expand into practical applications for more fascinating and useful ways of seeing, organizing, and making colors. Through a series of painting studies and color sketches, students will expand their palette and comfort with paint mixing and layering. Using inspirations from science, nature, paintings, and discovery, this class will lead painters into a broad understanding of color expressions with depth and mood.
MATERIALS:
Painters will need a warm and cool of each hue, as well as some glazing colors. Don’t break the bank! Bring what you have. Paint recommendations below, from the Gamblin 1980 line:
- Cool Yellow: Cadmium Yellow Light or Cadmium Lemon or Hansa Yellow Light
- Orangy Yellow: Yellow Ocher
- Orangy Red: Napthol Red or Cadmium Red
- Bluish Red: Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Red or Quinacridone Magenta
- Reddish Blue: Ultramarine Blue French
- Greenish Blue: Phthalo Blue or Cerulean or Prussian
- Bluish Green: Viridian Green or Phthalo Green (optional)
- Yellowish Green + Glaze: Sap Green (optional)
- Bright Orange: Permanent Orange (optional)
- Earth Orange: Burnt Sienna (optional)
- Violet: Dioxazine, Ultramarine violet, Cobalt violet, Manganese Violet (optional)
- Professional Grade White: Quick Dry Titanium White 150ml tube (or any white is fine)
Glaze Options:
- Linseed Oil, Galkyd, Liquin, Walnut Alkyd, or similar (we prefer the smell and dry time of M.Graham Walnut Alkyd)
Variety of soft nylon and bristle brushes. Any sizes between 1/2″ – 2″ Recommended nylon brush set for value:
Surfaces to paint on:
- Artist’s choice of re-primed canvas, primed panels, gessoed multimedia paper. (Most students opt for pre-primed canvas pad. Size is artist’s preference.
Other recommended materials:
- Viva paper towels or Blue Shop towels from the Hardware Store
- Gamsol OMS (Odorless Mineral Spirits) or Sennelier Green for Oil Thinner if you prefer to paint solvent free
- Glass Jar with a well-fitting lid for OMS
- Sketchbook for notes
- Bag to carry it all
