Oil Painting II: Fundamentals of Space and Form

This class is for students who have taken Beginning Oil Painting Part I at least once.

This class picks up where Beginning Oil Painting Part I leaves off with an exploration of dimensional effects in painting. These fundamental techniques are vital for any style of painting from abstraction to realism.

In this class for oil painters,

Fundamentals of Space and Dimension: This course teaches painting techniques for both flat and three-dimensional forms. Students will explore color, glazing, edges, textural, linear, and atmospheric perspectives, warm/cool contrasts, value contrast, and chroma intensity. The curriculum includes concepts from Cezanne and practical applications in contemporary painting. Students will mix and match contemporary and classical techniques in their work.

MATERIALS:

Don’t break the bank! Bring what you have from other painting classes.

  • Db Studio Canvas Pad/16×20 10 Sheets
  • Value Pack Brush Set/9131 Bristle 4 Set
  • Galkyd Lite – or other Glazing Liquid
  • Gambln Artist Oil/Quick Dry White 37ml
  • Gamblin 1980 Oils/Phthalo Blu 37ml
  • Gamblin 1980 Oils/Ylw Ochre 37ml
  • Gamblin 1980 Oils/Cad Ylw Lt 37ml
  • Gamblin 1980 Oils/Quin Magenta 37ml
  • Gamblin 1980 Oils/Ultramrn Blu 37ml
  • Gamblin 1980 Oils/Naphtol Red 37ml
  • Gamblin 1980 Oils/Brnt Sienna 37ml

Additional colors, from the Gamblin 1980 line:

  • Phthalo Green (optional)
  • Sap Green (optional)
  • Bright Orange: Permanent Orange (optional)
  • Earth Orange: Burnt Sienna (optional)
  • Professional Grade White: Quick Dry Titanium White 150ml tube (or any white is fine)

Glaze Options:

  • Linseed Oil, Galkyd, Liquin, Walnut Alkyd, or similar (we prefer the smell and dry time of M.Graham Walnut Alkyd)

Variety of soft nylon and bristle brushes. Any sizes between 1/2″ – 2″ Recommended nylon brush set for value:

Surfaces to paint on:

  • Artist’s choice of re-primed canvas, primed panels, gessoed multimedia paper. Most students opt for pre-primed canvas pad. Size is artist’s preference.

Other recommended materials:

  • Viva paper towels or Blue Shop towels from the Hardware Store
  • Gamsol OMS (Odorless Mineral Spirits) or Sennelier Green for Oil Thinner if you prefer to paint solvent free
  • Glass Jar with a well-fitting lid for OMS
  • Sketchbook for notes
  • Bag to carry it all
