Beginning Painting 2: Composition TUESDAY EVENING begins 1.27

$475.00

  • Teacher: Lendy Hensley
  • Course Length: 8 sessions
  • Start Date: Tuesday, beginning January 27
  • Time: 6:00 – 9:00 pm

This class is for students who have taken Beginning Painting at least once.

This class picks up where Beginning Painting leaves off with an exploration of compositional effects in painting. These fundamental techniques are vital for any style of painting from abstraction to realism.

In this class for oil painters, students will explore the fundamental question: How do you pull together all the elements of a painting into a unified, artistic whole?

We will study the art of composition – the underlying structure that organizes all elements of a painting. Students will learn to guide the viewer’s eye and effectively convey their artistic intent through thoughtful arrangement of shapes, colors, lines, and spaces.

Through hands-on projects and analysis of master works, participants will discover a range of compositional elements. You’ll learn to create compelling focal points and visual hierarchies, establish balance and rhythm within the canvas, and enhance the emotional impact of your work. The course will cover how to support a painting’s narrative or conceptual goals through compositional choices. You’ll explore ways to manipulate shape relationships and spatial organization, use value and color to direct attention, and activate negative space. You’ll practice balancing “crowded” and “empty” areas, consider the effects of vertical versus horizontal orientations, and employ texture and brushwork to enhance compositional flow. These skills will enable you to craft more intentional and impactful compositions.

By developing a strong grasp of compositional principles, you will learn to elevate their paintings from mere technical exercises to powerful visual statements. This course aims to help oil painters avoid common pitfalls such as disjointed imagery, unclear focus, or lack of viewer engagement, and instead create work with visual coherence and emotional resonance.
