Beginning Figure Drawing: Drawing from Sculpture

  • Teacher: Ruthie V.
  • Class Length: 8 week session
  • Class Days: Fridays, beginning January 27
  • Time: 6:00-8:30 pm

Instead of trying to make zoom pretend to be live, this class does something we can only do online: we’re going to draw from a series of figurative sculptures from around the world. A variety of images will allow us to view figurative sculptures from various angles, each with optimal lighting conditions, and a brief art history lesson will be available for each sculpture we study.

Since the Renaissance, artists have studied the figure by sketching from sculpture. In this class, we will continue the tradition of sketching from original works of art. Explore the dynamics of gesture as we work from the sculpture’s exaggerated angles, artful twisting and turning of the human body to react with space and light. Participants will study various modern and classical poses, with a variety of figure drawing styles such as mass, gesture, contours, form, site-sizing, and proportion. “Poses” will range from 2-40 minutes.

For options to work between sessions, photographs will be available on our private website 24/7 for the duration of this class. This class is packed with substantive information and feedback, so students can practice ideas in class, then take the lessons farther with personal studio time.

Figure drawing is a repeatable class! If you have taken this class before and enjoyed the format, take it again. You will not be bored, and your skills will continue to improve each time. You might impress yourself with what a revisit will do for your success and enjoyment.

No prerequisite. All levels welcome.
