Beginning Figure Drawing: Light and Shadow

This beginning figure drawing class is designed for students with little or no prior experience and offers a supportive, step-by-step introduction to drawing the human figure through light and shadow. Working from nude models, students will learn how light helps describe form, structure, and proportion in simple, approachable ways. Using foundational tools such as envelope drawing, distributed line, and basic shadow shapes, we’ll focus on seeing the figure as clear, organized masses rather than worrying about details. Emphasis is placed on gesture, introductory anatomy, and value relationships to help you build confidence and develop drawings that feel solid, balanced, and alive. This class welcomes true beginners and anyone looking to strengthen their fundamentals in a low-pressure, encouraging environment.
