    Beginning Drawing

Learn to see. Learn to draw.

At the League, drawing is where everything begins. This course builds core observational skills—line, shape, value, proportion, perspective, and composition—through structured, hands-on exercises.

You’ll start by training your eye to see clearly: contour, negative space, and light/shadow help you move past symbolic drawing into direct observation. From there, we shift into gesture, structure, mark-making, and spatial composition. Each class builds on the last, helping you construct drawings that are both accurate and expressive.

This is not a style-based class. You’ll explore different approaches, experiment with materials, and receive individual feedback to develop your own way of drawing. The focus is on seeing clearly, responding thoughtfully, and learning how drawing works—not just how it looks.

No experience necessary. Whether you’re starting fresh or returning after years away, this class offers a strong foundation for any visual art practice, including figure drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. It also leads directly into Drawing 2, where you’ll deepen your skills and develop more intentional, composed drawings.

    Materials:

    • Strathmore (or any brand) Sketch Paper 14×17”
    • Soft Willow Charcoal (sticks about as thick as a pencil)
    • Compressed charcoal sticks
    • Graphite pencils: one HB, one 6B
    • Mechanical Eraser Pen
    • Chamois cloth – small
    • Sketchbook for notes and homework
