Whether you want to begin to draw, return to drawing, or continue to work on your drawing skills, this class is for you. There is always more to learn about the basics of drawing!
This eight-week session will focus on essential drawing elements: line, value, shape, space, and color. You’ll have the opportunity to practice working with each element by doing short exercises and studying how other artists used it in their drawings. There will also be time in each class for a longer drawing, to allow you to integrate what you’ve learned into your own practice. You will be encouraged to try varied materials, to increase your artistic range and give you the confidence to keep experimenting.
This in-depth class for adult students is appropriate for beginners, people with some drawing lessons, or experienced artists who want additional instruction and practice.
I suggest a pad of white drawing paper 11×14 or larger
One option is: Canson XL Mixed Media 11×14 but choose any pad of decent drawing paper that is not terribly expensive. Ask the store clerks for suggestions, too
18×24 newsprint pad the cheapest you can find.
Pencils and charcoal:
For simplicity, you could get a package that includes the basics:
Generals Essential Tools
It has graphite pencils, charcoal, charcoal pencils, eraser, a sharpener, etc.
If you buy separately, please get:
Charcoal sticks (willow) (they come in small bags/boxes of 5 or so) medium or soft
Graphite pencils (at least 3) soft ones: 2B, 4B, 6B
Eraser (1 or 2) solid ones like Staedtler or Pink Pearl
A hand held pencil sharpener, there are endless choices.
Later in the session I will probably ask you to bring ink and a brush, as well as a sheet or two of better drawing paper. We will be using glue sticks at some point, and perhaps some color materials later in the session (colored pencils or watercolor or ?).
