    • Bas Relief Sculpture Shortie

Carving into leather-hard clay is like carving into cold butter. It’s delicious!

      Overview:

Join our Bas Relief Sculpture Shortie designed for both beginners and experienced artists. This course explores the art of bas relief, combining design techniques with personal expression.

      What you will learn:

Participants can choose to work from masterwork paintings and drawings (provided), or botanical patterns, landscapes, animals, mythical beasts, family figures, abstract or assemblage compositions, or any subject that interests you. This workshop emphasizes drawing and design development before carving, fostering a deep understanding of composition, proportion, rhythm, space, and innovation.

      • Art Inspirations: Get inspired by great artworks, broaden your ideas, and gain insights into various creative and compositional approaches.
      • Personal Expression: Use your own photos to capture unique and personal subjects. Draw and design from these references, simplify and innovate to enhance visual impact. Abstracts are welcome!
      • Design and Visualization: Develop an idea from conception to reality, with experimentation between.
      • Decoration: learn about slips, glazes, and oxides.

      Flexible Participation:

You will have the freedom to go at your own pace and level of preferred detail. Participants are encouraged to make several tiles. Be prepared to allow space for (gasp!) experimentation. In between classes, you have the extra option to work on pieces at home or during open studio hours. Participants will learn about color and finishing options, and can decorate their pieces in or out of class.

      Size, Shape, Durability:

Tiles can range from 4″ to 24″ and can be circular, rectangular, or any other shape. After firings, they are durable enough to live in your garden or be used as a trivet for hot pots.

      Class Structure:

Participants will be encouraged to draw and carve in each session. Each class includes an extra 30 minutes for slideshows and lessons, providing additional information and inspiration.

      Join Us:

Enroll in our Bas Relief Sculpture Workshop today! Whether you work from masterworks, imagination, or your own photos, this workshop will enhance your skills and deepen your appreciation for the art of bas relief.

      Prerequisite:

Beginning Drawing or equivalent practice suggested.

      Tools & Materials:

Included in the class price. Additional clay may be purchased if needed. Students who wish to take carving further might want to purchase their own personal set of tools.
