20 minutes of creative time
The daily goal is not a perfect art piece. The goal is 20 minutes of creative time. After 20 minutes, if you want to keep working on the project you can, but the goal is 20 minutes, and no matter what happens, 20 minutes of creative time is a win!
What’s your goal for 2021?
Special prizes will be given to people who complete all 30 challenges, but you don’t have to complete them all to participate, or to be eligible to win a prize. What are your own goals for creativity this January? Will you do three a week, every weekday, or all 30? Post your goals to social media, or on a note to yourself, and put it somewhere you’ll see it.
“I’m joining #30SAL this January. Stay tuned! I’m about to unleash my weird and wonderful creativity 30 days in a row.”
Invite a friend
Who might like to receive an invitation to join you? Think of a creative friend who would like to do a creative challenge with you. They can be any age, anywhere in the world. Invite them to join you, and make a pact to complete your individual goals. (You and your friend can have different goals!) Post your individual or team pact to your social media page using #30SAL.
“I’m joining #30SAL this January with @buddy’sname. Watch my instagram to see my 5 projects each week!”

We’re doing a fun series of sketches in “Abstracting the Image” on Thursdays. Each week we’re taking a masterwork and exploring it with approaches inspired by contemporary abstract painters. Sometimes I wonder what it might be like to draw or paint by following a series of set instructions, like a musician follows sheet music. Today is “see and respond” day in our 30 Day Challenge. Actually today it will be “respond and see” day, because our cues come from one of Sol LeWitt’s instructions …
