Keith Pfeiffer trained as an illustrator, and recently decided to jump over the fence to be a professional fine artist. His observation based drawings are finely tuned and skillfully rendered, with a focus on line and tone. His sketches are posted on Instagram for very affordable prices. We had just hired him at the League to teach summer teen camps, but coronavirus cost him his day job and he’s pretty darned nifty, so we have filled up his schedule for spring. He is now teaching mini classes in Advanced Doodling, Beginning Figure Drawing, Digital Painting, Digital Landscape Painting, and Digital Portrait Painting. I’ve enjoyed having him as a student in Thursday class. One of my favorite things to do is to give smart people a handful of ideas and theories, then watch what they do. In addition to his sequence of studies that inspired other students to try new things with color and composition, in group feedback his keen and positive observations caught things that I missed on more than one occasion. I’m excited to have Pfeiffer on our team!

This show at MoMA was brought to my attention by a League member. (Thanks Chris!) He had been there to see it and said it was impactful to see works in context not by culture, but by timeline. What was happening while Matisse painted his ladies? What was the dominant art world thinking about at the time, …
Before all those orange artworks, I was posting about Figure in Interior; the most unusual art class I’ve ever been a part of. I talked about Cezanne, and how making small marks distributed around the page (thank you to Fran O’Neill) can be a way to integrate time and change within a drawing. My premise …
