“Guitar Solo” -Day 29 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal challenge! Today’s challenge was to use a musical instrument to make art. I dipped my fingers in various pigments and played my guitar with a piece of paper between the strings and the frets. “Spare Parts” -Day 24 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal drawing-a-day challenge for the month of January! Today’s challenge is not necessarily a drawing. It is to make art using non-art materials. I got out some spare parts and started arranging them! “Emperor Trump’s Hat” -Day 19 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal drawing-a-day challenge for the month of January! Today’s challenge was to design a hat for someone famous, someone you know, or a fictional character.
“Make America GRATE again” -Day 11 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal drawing-a-day challenge for the month of January! Today’s challenge was to make a tonal drawing using Frottage, or rubbing, to generate a texture, layering the texture to create tone. My texture comes from the household grater, from which I derived my subject. Who could be more grating than Mr Trump?“Yorm’s Truckstop” -Day 20 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal drawing-a-day challenge for the month of January! Today’s challenge was to draw a memory, and this is an image from a dream that I had around age eight. The dream was a long and complicated one, but one moment that stood out was when while at this truck stop, an entire row of seemingly empty semis simultaneously started to life, and tried to run me down- I barely escaped with my life! And yes, Yorm’s was definitely the name of the truckstop.
“Lil Robot” -Day 10 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal challenge for the month of January! Today’s challenge built on yesterday’s foot theme, the idea being to draw a monopod creature. I didn’t realize the challenge was to attach a HUMANOID body to that foot, lol. So I give you lil robot. Also today’s design challenge was to make it dynamic. Well, what’s more dynamic than an animation?? “It’s the law” -Day 22 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal drawing-a-day challenge for the month of January. Today’s challenge was to draw someone in this very specific stylized mid century cartoon/advertising illustration style. Here’s a fictional 1957 ad for Siller’s shaving cream, featuring the Siller’s Bobby, their stereotypical mascot.
“Doors” -Day 21 of #seattleartistleague ‘s #30sal drawing-a-day challenge for the month of January! Today’s challenge was to create a doorzien scene, a scene featuring a view from one room into another.

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was an American seascape and landscape painter. Homer worked primarily in oil and watercolor paints, creating a prolific body of work that chronicled his working vacations. During the cold winter of 1884-5, Homer traveled to Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas. He painted a series of watercolors as part of a commission for Century Magazine. The fresh …
In the interview below, you’ll also see mention of “Ekphrasis.” In the days where each Thursday painter gave a brief presentation to the class, Skillman inspired us all with her presentation about ekphrastic poetry – a poem based on a work of art. In an ekphrastic poem, the writer describes the work of art, and may …
This robot was designed to have human-like focus. It looks first at the subject, then at the paper, and wiggles its little robot arm to make marks with a Bic pen. From this, a portrait is produced. It’s normal to assume that creative work is an emotional process, but observational drawing is more like this studious robot …
