An atelier is a snobby word for an artist’s workshop space. The word studio is from the Italian: studio, and from Latin: studium, from studere, meaning to study or zeal. The word atelier is French for workshop, especially the workroom or studio of a sculptor or painter, 1840, from French atelier, going back to the Old French astelier which was a carpenter’s workshop, woodpile (14c.).

For the last day of our challenge, draw/paint/collage/photograph your studio, your workshop, the space where you create. (Yay!)

…If you’re a regular V. Notes reader, you know I love posting collections like “drawings of artist’s studios.” I am a little short on time today, and disappointed that I didn’t find more drawings of studios in the time I had available. I did see a few other drawings of studios, but they were all white men, and you may have noticed they are already well represented in this post. They were also very similar to the drawings above, so didn’t seem to add much to the collection. If you find a drawing of a studio, especially a drawing that is visually different than what is above, and/or made by an under-represented artist, please send it to me, or use the comments section below this post and tell me how I can find it. It may end up in a future V. Note. Thanks!
PROCESS UPDATE: It has been a delight to have our official “Artist Not In Residence” Patty Haller around the studios. She has been at the studio almost every day, and openly sharing her process with students and guests. Today, NPR news is playing from a little boombox on the floor. On the table, a single potted fern …
I’ll be sharing my drawings on Facebook. I’d love for you to share yours too. Maybe we’ll get some people jumping in to join us. Post your pics on the Seattle Artist League‘s Facebook, or Instagram at SeattleArtLeague. #drawingaday #seattleartleague
Excerpt from Mitchell Albala’s Book: Simplification and Massing The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. – Hans Hoffman At a recent workshop, several students pointed to a cottonwood tree that was gently swaying in the breeze. “How are we going to paint all those leaves?” they asked. …
People are posting their creative challenges online! You can find them by using the hashtag #salchallenge. You can also find some videos of people pretending to shake salt into their mouths. That’s a different kind of challenge. We don’t judge. I found some interesting drawings posted by marisa_vitiello. Love this wondering line-shape motif! Nice little composition, …
