Bruce Nauman, Failing to Levitate in My Studio, 1966.
In art school I learned about the clever and funny Bruce Nauman. In particular, I learned about a series for which he said (I’m paraphrasing broadly) “I am an artist, therefore everything I do is art, therefore this is art.” And then he’d do something silly such as fail to levitate. This gave me a giggle in art school, but now as I decide what I will make for my next show and most of my interesting little ideas and pleasant creative moments die in the editing process of asking what is “worth it” or what is an “appropriate” piece for me to make, I feel this more profoundly. Today, be ridiculous. Be self important. Fail to _____. You are an artist, therefore everything you do is art. Document a little moment or an idea, something you would otherwise edit. One of the many programs she built was the Children’s Art Carnival …
Day 25 of our 30 Day January Challenge was to make instructions that no one will ever need. Apparently, when artists are outlining useless instructions they are at their very best. The last one is my personal favorite, but there were so many great drawings to post, the last one is a long, long, long …
With experience copying classical antique sculptures in Florence, Francis Harwood created this exceptional sculpture which combined the elements of classical sculpture with the subject of a more modern (1700s) Black individual – a subject we do not frequently have the privilege of seeing. In fact, this noble bust by Francis Harwood is one of the …
Tennis said he grabbed a crayon at random, and slowly started making a line on the paper. He tried not to think about where the line was going or dictate where it went. He’d just let it go, as if he was watching a bug walk across the page. This “not thinking” thing is difficult …
