Bruce Nauman, Failing to Levitate in My Studio, 1966.
In art school I learned about the clever and funny Bruce Nauman. In particular, I learned about a series for which he said (I’m paraphrasing broadly) “I am an artist, therefore everything I do is art, therefore this is art.” And then he’d do something silly such as fail to levitate. This gave me a giggle in art school, but now as I decide what I will make for my next show and most of my interesting little ideas and pleasant creative moments die in the editing process of asking what is “worth it” or what is an “appropriate” piece for me to make, I feel this more profoundly. Today, be ridiculous. Be self important. Fail to _____. You are an artist, therefore everything you do is art. Document a little moment or an idea, something you would otherwise edit.
