Do not paint a white thing white. A white thing is everything other than white.
The video below illuminates some of the colors actually present in an image of a white horse, and a white flower. Because colors change according to what they’re next to, they still fool me even after all these years.
COLOR MIXING TIP 1: When I want to match a color without being fooled by illusions, I isolate it from the surrounding colors by looking at it through a hole in a piece of white or gray paper.
COLOR MIXING TIP 2: To test a color mix with a photo reference, I put the reference in a big ziplock bag and plop the paint right on the plastic over the photo so I can see what needs adjusting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCf1KAl8c6E
